Abstract
The belief of some of the authors of works in the exegetical schools and trends is that the authors of narrative exegeses have simply compiled traditions (hadiths) that often directly refer to some of the words and phrases of the verses without any independent reasoning (ijtihād). Contrary to this view, evidence suggests that that the authors of these exegeses exercised independent reasoning (ijtihād) at least in two areas—selection of hadith sources and relevant traditions (hadiths) —exercised independent reasoning (ijtihād) to uncover the meaning of the verses. In this regard, this research, using a descriptive-analytical method through the comparison of well-known Shia narrative exegeses, aims to elucidate the examples of independent reasoning (ijtihad) by their authors regarding the abrogation of Verses of Peace by the Verses on Fighting and to examine the factors influencing this process. The findings of this research indicate that these exegeses differ in several aspects from each other, such as whether they address the issue of abrogation of the Verses of Peace by the Verses of Fighting or not, the extent of their discussion on the topic, whether they mention conflicting traditions or not, and whether the exegetes evaluate these traditions or not. The differences in the exegete's interpretation method, the selection of the source by the exegetes, and their attention to the historical trend of diminishing occurrences of abrogation in Islamic writings over time are among the most significant factors influencing these distinctions. The study highlights the distinctiveness of Shiite narrative exegeses regarding the abrogation of Verses of Peace by the Verses of Fighting as an example of the exegetes’ interpretive reasoning (ijtihad) in the writing of the Shia narrative interpretations. Among the findings of this research is the influence of the Sunni sources on Shia exegeses in this area, as well as the weakening of Aqa Buzurg Tehrani's view regarding the authorship of Tafsir al-Qummi.
