Maqāṣid-based Tafsir, or an exegesis based on God’s intention, is an innovative method in the field of Qur'anic studies that, alongside its concern with addressing contemporary needs, emphasizes the importance of the author's intent as a key element in understanding religious texts. The necessity of addressing this issue arises because, despite the long-standing tradition of exegetical methods based on the intent of the author, many emerging exegesis theories seriously oppose the centrality of authorial intent and insist on the independence of the text and its meaning from the author. In the contemporary period, Imam Khomeini and Allamah Ṭabāṭabāī are two prominent scholars who have specifically and distinctly focused on the Maqāṣid-based approach to understanding religion, particularly the Qur'an. They have emphasized the need to return to this important principle. This article aims to use a descriptive-analytical method to revisit the exegeses of these two contemporary scholars and conduct a comparative study, analyzing the major manifestations of the Maqāṣid-based approach in their exegetical thoughts. Based on the findings of this research, the most significant reflection of the Maqāṣid-based approach in their exegesis can be observed in their focus on interpreting Qur'anic verses based on the overall purpose of the Qur'an. According to this approach, paying attention to the overall objective of each Surah and searching for the purpose in each context is considered a legitimate method for understanding the Qur'an, alongside the independent interpretation of verses outside their context in light of the broader purpose.
