Verse 28 of Surah Yusuf, with the phrase ﴿...إِنَّ کَیْدَکُنَّ عَظِیمٌ﴾, is one of the verses of interest to commentators in analyzing human behavior and social relations of women. The incorrect interpretation of this verse by some of them has led to unscientific and gender-based generalizations and ultimately challenges such as the existence of gender discrimination in the Quran. The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method, explains the interpretive perspective of two Western commentators of the Islamic world (Qurtubi and Ibn Ashur) on the aforementioned verse, and analyzes and evaluates their approach to the aforementioned interpretive challenges. The findings of the present study show that Qurtubi, with his traditional moral orientation, has taken the meaning of "Kid" to the gender and emotional realm. His view, which is accompanied by generalizing "Kid Azim" to all women and considering "Kid women" greater than "Kid Satan" by citing a narration from Abu Hurairah, not only conflicts with theological principles based on the greatness of creation and the power of Satan as Iblis in misleading mankind, but also has led to the aforementioned challenges. Ibn Ashur explains the "cunning of women" in the context of human resourcefulness and the fictional situation of Joseph. He limits the addressee of the challenging phrase mentioned in verse 28 of Surah Joseph to Zulaykha and women of the same type and who cooperate with her, and prevents it from being generalized to all women. In this way, he provides a deeper and more scientific understanding of the moral and educational message of the verse.
