Allama Muhammad HosseinTabataba'i and Allama Muhammad Hossein Fazlullah, two of the most prominent contemporary Shiite commentators, have presented valuable interpretations of the Quran by using the method of interpreting the Quran by the Quran, each of which has unique characteristics in its interpretative approach. This study uses a descriptiveanalytical method to compare the bases, sources, and interpretive tendencies of these two commentators and seeks to explain their similarities and differences. In the field of interpretive bases, both commentators believe in the immunity of the Quran from distortion, the intelligibility of the verses for the general public, the authenticity of the Quranic appearances, and the acceptance of the abrogation of some Quranic rulings. However, there are differences in the issue of the miracle of the Quran and the role of interpretive narrations;Tabataba'i considers the miracle of the Quran to be general and includes various aspects such as rhetoric, news of the unseen, and the absence of differences, while Fazlullah limits the miracle to the expressive aspect and emphasizes the rhetoric of the Quran. Also,Tabataba'i uses interpretive narrations as a confirmation and complement to the interpretation, but Fadlallah accepts only narrations that serve the understanding and inference of the verses and pays special attention to the careful criticism of the narrations'documents. In terms of interpretive sources, bothcommentators have used the Quran, Sunnah, reason, hadith sources, and previous interpretations, but Tabataba'i uses reason as an independent source in interpretation, while Fadlallah considers reason as a tool for better understanding the Quran and Sunnah. In terms of interpretive tendencies, both commentators share a social and literary tendency and have avoided dealing with a jurisprudential tendency. However,Tabataba'i hasaprominent philosophical and theological tendency and analyzes theological issues with philosophical rationality, while Fadlallah lacks a philosophical tendency andemphasizes innate and applied rationality intheological analysisThis research shows that the interpretive differences between these two commentators,in addition to their different intellectual methods, stem from theirdistinct social and political concerns, especially the impact ofLebanon's dynamic environment on Fadlallah.
